Kinja'd!!!

Three cylinder 1.2 with about 80 bhp. Ford made about 100 in the early 1990s for research purposes but gave up when the emissions turned out to be not as claimed. A couple survive in museums.

That’s some weird stuff. I wonder where they got that massive COP setup. Looks almost like mod motor coils.

I remember one of the car magazines writing these up back then. There was also a Tempo with “T drive” where there was a ring and pinion in the middle of a straight 6 driving a rear mounted transaxle.

Yes, I vaguely remember the T drive thing as well.

There’s a copy of a road test report on the internet of the Fiesta which describes it as having about the same performance of the 1.4 four stroke (the two stroke was a 1.2) and better economy but that it wasn’t much good to drive and that if this was the future they could put up with it but not with any enthusiasm.

Ford Britain and Ford Germany each built about 50 using engines supplied by Orbital and lent them out but when it became obvious that the idea was going nowhere they were nearly all crushed. At least two survive. One was given to the Haynes Museum and the other spent some time at Southampton University where the students managed to break it, after which it sat in a car park rusting away for ten years before being donated to another museum.
